Unfailingly positive, stout at altitude and seemingly resistant to cold, is how the legendary Sherpas are often described. They have been an integral part of Everest climbing expeditions from the very beginning. Indeed, very few significant successes have been achieved without them. It was Sherpa Tenzig Norgay who first reached the summit with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, and Tenzig who planted the flag in the famous photo of Triumph. 55 years later, Finisterre decided to support a team of three at The Independent Collective, who were going to document the first of its kind skydive over Everest. Chris and crew wore Finisterre product, said it kept them cosy in some fairly cold conditions and in the end, handed their products to their group of Sherpas who had helped the crew with their equipment. Quite an amazing feeling to think Finisterre with their routes in Cornwall are at the base of Mt Everest and that some of the worlds elite mountaineering ethnicities, are wearing Finisterre garments.

Imagine skydiving onto the top of the world...
A new series from the Independent Collective will chronicle the greatest skydive ever attempted -- above Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth.
Freefalling from a small plane nearly 30,000 feet above the spectacular and forbidding Himalayas, a group of brave adventurers will put themselves into the record books as the first people ever to parachute onto the 29,000 foot mountain.
Two years in the planning, the project is a world's first, and will attract skydivers from all over the world. They'll be pushed to their absolute limits as they battle Everest's deadly and unpredictable weather, including the mountain's 200 mph jet streams, which make this the most difficult and dangerous drop zone on the planet.
Through five episodes, viewers follow the emotions and motivations of six individuals as they face new and ever-toughening challenges to complete their mission - and stay alive.

Throughout April and May TIC produced two fly on the wall documentary inside Eurostar. The premise of the documentaries was to follow the decisions and discussions, led by Chief Executive Richard Brown as they developed their green manifesto, commented to make Eurostar Greener still and set in place their ground breaking Tread Lightly campaign launched back in April.
Over two months TIC recorded the process by which the company launched its green manifesto and committed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a further 25% per traveler journey by 2012. But that wasn't all. Any remaining emissions will offset, at no cost to the traveler resulting 100% carbon neutral journeys. Very impressive indeed! We learnt all sorts of interesting facts from Eurostar but one thing in particular stood out form the rest. By choosing to take Eurostar to London from Paris, you emit 10 x less CO2 than you would do by flying - that's the difference between a double decker bus full of CO2, or a mini. That's pretty incredible!
It was great to be part of what proved to be a first for the travel industry setting the standard for others to follow. Filming took place and pulled together contributors as diverse as Al Gore, Tony Juniper (Executive Director, Friends of the Earth) and retail champion Stuart Rose (Chief Executive, Marks & Spencer).
A few quote from the shoot-
"Doing nothing is not an option. What Eurostar is doing is a plan for the future."
Stuart Rose, Chief Executive, Marks & Spencer.
"Eurostar is leading the way by making a real reduction."
Tony Juniper, Executive Director, Friends of the Earth
All in all fun was had by all and now the green message is out there for others to follow. In fact we at Jumpship where so enthused by Eurostar and their Tread Lightly campaign we decided to learn from them and educate you the public.
Are you a green genius? Or carbon-confused? If you'd like to understand the basics of climate change or would like to learn more we've put together a brief guide for you below.
FAQs
Why is the climate changing? The term climate change refers to the variation in the earth's temperature, in particular the rise in the average surface temperature, known as global warming. Rising carbon dioxide levels in the upper atmosphere, primarily resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, are responsible for accelerating global warming.
What's Carbon Dioxide? Carbon Dioxide is a gas that's naturally present in the earth's atmosphere. You may see Carbon Dioxide referred to as CO2, or just as carbon. Carbon Dioxide is the gas that is emitted when we burn fossil fuels (like oil, coal and gas) to generate energy. As the world's energy needs have grown, so have our emissions of Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide levels are now higher than they have been for at least 20 million years. This concentration of gas in the atmosphere has resulted in the earth's temperature rising. This process is what scientists call the Greenhouse Effect.
What is offsetting? Offsetting schemes allow people or companies to partially neutralise their own carbon dioxide emissions by financially supporting projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions elsewhere.
I'm curious - where can I find out more?
This is a big and complex issue, and there are lots of websites and newspaper articles you could read. This isn't an exhaustive list, but these are some people we think are doing good things on climate change:
Friends of the Earth makes life better for people by inspiring solutions to environmental problems. It is one of the UK's most influential environmental campaigning organisations. Climate change is a top priority and their Big Ask climate campaign has successfully campaigned for a new climate change law.
Forum for the Future is a sustainable development charity that works with forward-looking organisations in business and the public sector to find practical ways to build a future that is environmentally viable, socially just and economically prosperous.
Marks & Spencers recently launched their Plan A - so called because there is no Plan B - a 100 point plan to tackle the environmental impact of their business. We're fans of what they're doing, and we think you will be interested too.
Transport 2000 are an independent organisation who campaign for sustainable transport solutions. They aim to reduce the environmental and social impact of transport.
